This is an incredible post. Thanks for being the D-Mom that you are. You have given Lauren (and yourself and the rest of your family) so much. Your courage is now her strength. I look forward to seeing her – famous and doing big things – one day. And, of course, I’ll never forget when she had dinner at our place in Steamboat. By the way, if skiing really is your true love, you need to get here again soon!

Love your post Moira. It is so hard to let go of wanting to protect them and let them be a happy, fulfilled, healthy person who happens to have diabetes. Our Lauren is an athlete who just happens to have D. She is currently in Chile kayaking class 4 rivers and get home today to head back to college in Calif. So many friends are surprised that we’ve let go of her….. to go away to college, travel to horse shows ( she competes in jumping her horse 1.20m ) , spend summers in Idaho rafting, kayaking and riding. It’s been a huge struggle to give her the freedom to have a full life and it’s still bumpy at times. Your sharing and articulating so well is so comforting and reassuring that we are all on the right track for our children, who just happen to have Diabetes…

I think probably if you are happy and fulfilled you are more willing to put in the extra effort to be healthy. Seems like the right order to me.

I loved reading Lauren’s post! It was great to see that you’ve raised a young woman who would “push back”, one with spunk. I wouldn’t have expected anything less though from a child you raised. How grown-up when she realized the “cost” of independence was responsibility on her part.

What an exciting time for both you and Lauren – you both rock and are role models for so many. I’ve always taken your advice and told Sam that we won’t let diabetes interfere with anything she wants to do – but when I said that I was thinking more along the lines of her continuing to play competative tennis. I had no idea that what she’d decide to do was take her not so perfect A1C and a bunch of insulin off to a remote area of Africa! Now I’m the one tossing and turning and taking some leaps of faith. But I’m so proud of her, and all our kids that manage to fit in a full life and juggle diabetes at the same time. Thanks for continuing to be a role model to show us all how to help our D kids live happy fulfilled lives.
