I thought about not writing my comment since it could kinda come off as "this is what you should have done" but I figured for all the other people reading with kids heading to college it could be helpful so they don't end up in the same situation.

Shelby's 1st yr had 8 suitemates in the dorm and I gave them each a pupublication for college roommates. They only guarantee housing for Freshman (lack of Boston space). Yr 2 was an apt with 2 roommates from *heck*. She's wisely decided to become an RA and her experience with first-hand knowing D had gotten her the position. I had a bit of a hard time 'letting go', but I feel she's now 'got it'. There'll always be that D-mom pang of wanting to still take of her, but her experiences one at a time have prepared her so enough to make me proud! Though Moira, you've gotten me through some trials and tribulations, too!

Yeah we just never thought of it. now they ONLY thing they will do is place her -- but not with anyone she knows, which she does not want in her senior year. And yep, as you said, not retroactive. Live and learn -- I'm glad you pointed this out so others can know!

Did Lauren have housing in her accommodation plan? For any parent of a curent college student or future college student, consider making sure that priority in the housing selection process is included in the plan. If priority class selection is a reasonable accommodation (to make sure classes do not interfere with eating plans) than why can't priority class selection be included to make sure that the best housing circumstance for the student are obtained? It is important to do this before you have a problem, accommodations are not retroactive.

I'm so glad you and many other capable D-moms are blazing the trail of independence before me. I'm taking notes all the time for the upcoming years! Just this morning I put Hailey on a bus with 7-12th graders for a full day choir festival trip a couple hours away & said "have fun!" A few other moms asked "you're NOT going with her?" Nope. Not this time. She'll be fine. (Of course she has enough sugar in her backpack for the whole choir to go down with hypoglycemia, but I digress...). Time for this Mom to learn to let go, just a little...
